# Gabble > Gabble is a free dictation (speech-to-text) app for macOS. You hold a key, speak, and clean text is typed into whichever app is in front. Speech recognition runs entirely on the Mac using OpenAI Whisper (via WhisperKit) and NVIDIA Parakeet (via FluidAudio) Core ML models, so it works offline, needs no account and never uploads audio. Gabble sends only the transcript text to http://localhost:11434, so both speech recognition and the rewrite stay on your Mac. - [Custom vocabulary for Mac dictation: names and jargon](https://gabble.karakabakov.com/guides/dictation-custom-vocabulary.md): To make Mac dictation spell your names and jargon correctly, add each term to a custom dictionary together with the wrong versions the app keeps producing. In Gabble that is the Dictionary tab: a preferred spelling plus 'heard as' replacements, applied on your Mac to every dictation. With Whisper models the dictionary also biases the recogniser towards your terms. - [How to dictate into any Mac app (Slack, VS Code, Mail)](https://gabble.karakabakov.com/guides/dictate-into-any-app-mac.md): To dictate into any Mac app, install a system-wide dictation app, grant it Microphone and Accessibility permission, then hold the dictation key in any text field and speak. In Gabble the key is Right Option by default, and per-app rules pick a writing mode automatically: Email in Mail, Message in Slack, Developer in VS Code. - [How to dictate on a Mac (2026)](https://gabble.karakabakov.com/guides/how-to-dictate-on-mac.md): To dictate on a Mac, open System Settings, go to Keyboard, turn on Dictation, then press the microphone key in any text field and talk. It is free and built in, but whether your audio stays on the Mac depends on your Mac and language. Third-party apps such as Gabble add on-device speech models, filler-word cleanup and per-app formatting. - [Offline dictation on Mac: transcribe without the cloud](https://gabble.karakabakov.com/guides/offline-dictation-mac.md): Yes, a Mac can dictate offline. Apple's Dictation runs on device for some Mac and language combinations, and Keyboard settings tells you which. Apps like Gabble download a Whisper or Parakeet model once and then recognise speech on the Mac with no connection. - [Voice coding on Mac: dictate prompts to Cursor and VS Code](https://gabble.karakabakov.com/guides/voice-coding-mac.md): Voice coding on a Mac mostly means dictating prompts, commit messages and comments, not code syntax. In Gabble you hold Right Option in Cursor, a terminal running Claude Code, or VS Code, speak, and the text is pasted in. Developer mode and a dictionary of your identifiers keep technical terms spelled the way they are in code. - [Whisper vs Parakeet: which speech model on a Mac?](https://gabble.karakabakov.com/guides/whisper-vs-parakeet.md): Pick Parakeet if you dictate in English or another European language: on the Open ASR Leaderboard English average, Parakeet v2 scores 6.05% word error rate and v3 scores 6.34%, against 7.83% for Whisper large-v3-turbo. Pick Whisper if you need a language outside Parakeet v3's 25, since Whisper covers 99. Lower is better, and these are benchmark numbers, not live dictation results. ## Blog - [Introducing Gabble: free, local dictation for Mac](https://gabble.karakabakov.com/blog/introducing-gabble.md): Gabble is a free dictation app for Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 14 or later. You hold Right Option, talk, and the text is pasted into whichever app is in front. Speech recognition runs entirely on the Mac with Parakeet or Whisper models, so audio is never uploaded, and there is no account. - [Is dictation really 4x faster than typing?](https://gabble.karakabakov.com/blog/typing-vs-speaking-speed.md): Dictation is roughly 3x faster than typing for the average person, not 4x or 5x. Conversational speech runs at about 150 words per minute and the average typing speed measured across 168,000 people is 52 words per minute, which is a ratio of about 2.9. Fast typists gain much less, and the time you spend fixing errors reduces the gain further. - [What dictation subscriptions cost over three years](https://gabble.karakabakov.com/blog/dictation-subscription-math.md): A dictation subscription costs between about $240 and $1,080 over three years at October 2026 list prices, depending on the vendor and whether you pay monthly or annually. One-time Mac licences run from $25 to about 64 euros, and Apple Dictation and Gabble are free. The cheapest monthly price is rarely the number you end up paying. - [Why your dictation app shouldn't need the cloud](https://gabble.karakabakov.com/blog/why-local-dictation.md): A dictation app does not need the cloud any more, because open speech models such as Whisper and Parakeet run on an Apple Silicon Mac. Local dictation means your audio never leaves the machine, it works with no connection, and there is no per-word server cost to pass on to you. Cloud apps still win on phone support and zero setup. ## Optional - [Privacy](https://gabble.karakabakov.com/privacy) - [Changelog](https://gabble.karakabakov.com/changelog) - [Full text of every page](https://gabble.karakabakov.com/llms-full.txt)
