What dictation subscriptions cost over three years

By · Updated · 5 min read

Dictation pricing pages show you a small monthly number. The number that matters is what leaves your account over the time you actually use the thing. So I did the multiplication.

Every price below was read on the vendor's own page on 8 October 2026 and is linked. Prices change, so check the link before you decide. All figures are list prices, before tax and discounts, and assume the price stays the same for three years.

What do the subscriptions cost over three years?

Between $240 and $1,080, depending on vendor and billing period. These are the individual paid plans with unlimited dictation.

App and plan Monthly billing Annual billing 3 years, paid monthly 3 years, paid annually
Wispr Flow Pro $15/month $12/month ($144/year) $540 $432
Aqua Voice Pro $10/month $8/month ($96/year) $360 $288
Typeless Pro $30/month $12/month ($144/year) $1,080 $432
Superwhisper Pro $8.49/month not confirmed $305.64 not confirmed
OpenWhispr Pro not confirmed $80/year not confirmed $240

The arithmetic is just price times 36 months, or annual price times 3.

Two notes on the gaps. Superwhisper's page shows yearly and lifetime options, but I could not confirm those prices on the vendor's own page, so I left them out. OpenWhispr's page shows the annual price, and I could not confirm a monthly one. OpenWhispr is also open source, and its free plan lists unlimited local models, so the paid plan there is for its cloud features.

How much does paying monthly add?

Paying monthly adds between $72 and $648 over three years on the plans where both prices are published.

App Extra cost of monthly billing over 3 years Annual discount on the monthly rate
Wispr Flow Pro $108 20%
Aqua Voice Pro $72 20%
Typeless Pro $648 60%

The headline price on a pricing page is usually the annual rate shown per month. If you try a tool month to month, which is the sensible way to try anything, you pay the other number.

What do the one-time and free options cost?

They cost between nothing and about 64 euros, once.

App Price What you get
VoiceInk $25 one-time (1 Mac), $39 (2 Macs), $49 (3 Macs) Local dictation on Apple Silicon. Open source under GPL v3, so you can also build it yourself for free
MacWhisper Pro 64 euros per licence, one-time Local file and meeting transcription plus dictation. A free version exists
Apple Dictation Free Built into macOS
Gabble Free (version 0.1 beta) Local dictation on Apple Silicon, macOS 14 or later, no account

A one-time price that includes lifetime updates costs the same in year three as in year one. That is the whole appeal.

What do the free tiers of the subscription apps include?

They include a word allowance, and it is smaller than it sounds.

To put 2,000 words in context: people talk at about 150 words per minute. So 2,000 words is roughly 13 minutes of speech. If dictation becomes a habit, a weekly allowance like that goes quickly.

Why do some dictation apps need a subscription at all?

Because cloud transcription has a running cost and local transcription does not. A cloud service sends your audio to servers and runs a model there. Every sentence costs the vendor compute. A recurring cost needs recurring revenue, and a subscription is the honest way to cover it.

An app that runs the model on your Mac has no per-sentence cost. Your computer does the work. That is why the local apps in the table above can be one-time purchases or free.

This is not an argument that subscriptions are a rip-off. The cloud products bundle things local Mac apps often lack: phone and Windows apps, sync, team admin, compliance paperwork. If you need those, you are paying for something real. Why your dictation app shouldn't need the cloud goes through that trade.

How should you decide?

Work out what you need, then look at the three-year number and not the monthly one.

  1. Try the free options first. Apple's Dictation is already on your Mac. How to dictate on a Mac shows how to turn it on.
  2. Check whether you need more than a Mac. If you want the same tool on your phone or on Windows, that points to a cloud subscription. Gabble does not run on either.
  3. Decide where your audio should go. If it should stay on your machine, look at the local apps.
  4. Do the multiplication. $12 a month sounds like a coffee. $432 sounds like a decision.

Then pick with your eyes open. Plenty of people will look at $432 over three years for a tool they use every day and call it a bargain, and they would be right.

Where does Gabble fit?

Gabble is free while it is in beta, and I am not going to pretend that tells you what it costs in year three. I have not announced anything beyond the beta. What I can say is what it is today: version 0.1, free, no account, no word limit, with speech recognition running on your Mac.

It also does less than the paid products. There are no phone, Windows or Intel versions, no meeting recording and no live streaming text. The comparison of Mac dictation apps puts all of these side by side on features, not only price.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a dictation app cost per year?

At October 2026 list prices, annual plans for the subscription dictation apps covered here run from $80 to $144 per year. Paying month to month costs from about $102 to $360 per year.

Is there a dictation app with a one-time purchase?

Yes. VoiceInk lists one-time licences from $25 and MacWhisper Pro is listed at 64 euros per licence with lifetime updates. Both are Mac apps that run speech models locally.

Is there a free dictation app for Mac with no word limit?

Apple's built-in Dictation is free with no word limit. Gabble is free with no word limit and no account, on Apple Silicon Macs with macOS 14 or later.

Why do dictation apps charge a subscription?

Cloud dictation runs your audio through the vendor's servers, which costs them money for every sentence. A subscription covers that ongoing cost. Apps that run the model on your Mac do not have it.

How many words do free dictation plans include?

It varies. Wispr Flow's free plan lists 2,000 words per week on desktop and Aqua Voice lists 1,000 free words. At a speaking rate of 150 words per minute, 2,000 words is about 13 minutes of talking.

Is annual billing worth it for a dictation app?

Only if you are sure you will use it for the year. Annual plans cut the monthly rate by 20% to 60% on the vendors covered here, but you pay for twelve months up front.
