Cloud dictation apps

Wispr Flow

Wispr Flow runs on Mac, Windows, iOS and Android. It removes fillers, handles mid-sentence corrections, learns dictionary entries and includes a meeting notetaker on desktop. Transcription always happens in the cloud, so it needs a connection. Free plan: 2,000 words a week on desktop. Pro: $15 per user per month, or $12 billed annually.

Suits: people who want polished dictation on every device with no setup, and teams that need SSO or HIPAA paperwork. Gabble vs Wispr Flow

Aqua Voice

Aqua Voice is a cloud service on its own Avalon speech model, for Mac, Windows, iOS and Android. It uses screen context, including code syntax, and has a custom dictionary. Free: 1,000 words, with signup. Pro: $10 a month or $8 billed annually. Max, which adds Realtime Mode: $30 a month or $24 billed annually.

Suits: people who dictate technical text and want screen-aware recognition. Gabble vs Aqua Voice

Typeless

Typeless is cloud dictation that rewrites speech into finished text. It runs on macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android. It has a personal dictionary, tone per app, translation and speak-to-edit. Its privacy page says audio is processed on its cloud servers and discarded once the result is returned. The free plan has limited words. Pro: $30 a month, or $12 a month billed yearly.

Suits: people who want heavy automatic rewriting on every platform, Linux included, and will pay yearly.

Apps that offer both local and cloud

Superwhisper

Superwhisper runs on macOS, Windows, iOS and Android. On Apple Silicon Macs its local voice models work without an internet connection, and it also offers cloud models. It has custom modes, custom vocabulary, file transcription and meeting recording. The free plan covers basic voice-to-text. Pro is $8.49 a month, with yearly and lifetime options on the site.

Suits: power users who want control over models and prompts, with one licence across devices. Gabble vs Superwhisper

MacWhisper

MacWhisper is a Mac app built around local Whisper and Parakeet models, with optional cloud providers. It transcribes files in batches, YouTube videos and podcasts, and records meetings automatically. System-wide dictation is included. There is a free version, and Pro is €64 one-time with lifetime updates.

Suits: people who mainly transcribe recordings and want to pay once. Gabble vs MacWhisper

OpenWhispr

OpenWhispr is open source under MIT and runs on macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel), Windows and Linux. You pick local or cloud transcription. It adds meeting transcription, notes, a custom dictionary and bring-your-own-key AI. Local models are free and unlimited. Hosted transcription is capped at 2,000 words a week on the free plan, and Pro is $80 per user per year.

Suits: people who want open source on more than the Mac, or dictation, notes and meetings together. Gabble vs OpenWhispr

Local-first Mac apps

VoiceInk

VoiceInk is an open source (GPL v3) dictation app for Apple Silicon Macs. It runs Whisper, Parakeet and SenseVoice on the device, with a personal dictionary, per-app Power Mode and AI Enhancement that sends only text. The ready-made app costs $25 one-time for one Mac, $39 for two or $49 for three. Building from source is free.

Suits: Mac users who want auditable, local dictation and prefer a one-time price. Gabble vs VoiceInk

Natter

Natter is a free, open source (Apache 2.0) menu bar app by Ian Nuttall for Apple Silicon Macs on macOS 15 or later. It uses a Parakeet model for speech (a 1.16 GB download) and optional local Qwen models for cleanup. Its README says there is no account, no cloud transcription and no telemetry.

Suits: people who want fully local dictation and cleanup with open code, and have the disk space for local language models.

Gabble

Gabble is our app. It is free, for Apple Silicon Macs on macOS 14 or later, with no account. Speech recognition runs on the Mac with Parakeet v3 (25 European languages) or Whisper models up to Large v3 Turbo (99 languages). Audio is never written to disk or uploaded.

Hold a key to talk and the text is pasted when you release. Clean mode removes fillers on-device. Optional AI modes run through Ollama or your own Anthropic or OpenAI-compatible key, and per-app rules choose a mode for you. It also has a dictionary, voice snippets, local history and file transcription.

The limits: it is a 0.1 beta and closed source for now. There is no Windows, iOS, Android or Intel Mac version, no meeting recording, no live text while you speak, and no team features or sync.

Suits: people who want free, unlimited, local dictation on one Apple Silicon Mac and can live with a young app. Download Gabble

Apple Dictation comes with macOS. It adds punctuation in supported languages and has no length limit. Whether audio is processed on device depends on your Mac and language. Keyboard Settings will tell you.

Suits: occasional dictation with nothing to install. Start here. Gabble vs Apple Dictation

Our recommendation

Try Apple Dictation first, because it is already there. If you work on several devices, trial Wispr Flow or Superwhisper. For local dictation on the Mac, compare VoiceInk, OpenWhispr and Gabble on your own work. For recordings, get MacWhisper.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best dictation app for Mac in 2026?

It depends on what you need. Wispr Flow and Superwhisper are the most complete across devices, MacWhisper is strongest for transcribing files and meetings, and VoiceInk, OpenWhispr and Gabble are good local options on the Mac.

What is the best free dictation app for Mac?

Apple Dictation is free and built in. For local dictation with more features, Gabble and OpenWhispr are free with no word limit on local models, and MacWhisper has a free version.

Which Mac dictation apps work offline?

Gabble, VoiceInk, OpenWhispr, MacWhisper and Natter run speech models on the Mac, and Superwhisper does on Apple Silicon. Wispr Flow, Aqua Voice and Typeless are cloud services.

Which Mac dictation apps are open source?

OpenWhispr (MIT), VoiceInk (GPL v3) and Natter (Apache 2.0) are open source. Gabble, Wispr Flow, Superwhisper, MacWhisper, Aqua Voice and Typeless are not.

Is dictation faster than typing?

Usually, for a first draft. Average typing speed measured in a large Aalto University study was 52 words per minute, and conversational English runs at about 150 words per minute. That ignores the time you spend correcting errors.

Do I need to pay for a dictation app on Mac?

No. Apple Dictation, Gabble, Natter and local use of OpenWhispr cost nothing. Paid apps earn their price with phone apps, meeting notes, cloud models or team features.
