Gabble vs MacWhisper: dictation or transcription?

By · Updated · 4 min read

MacWhisper and Gabble both put Whisper and Parakeet models on your Mac, and both keep the audio there by default. They are built for different jobs. MacWhisper is a transcription app first: files, meetings, podcasts, YouTube. Dictation is included. Gabble is a dictation app first: hold a key, talk, text lands in the app in front. File transcription is included.

So the useful question is what you do more often.

Where MacWhisper is the better choice

You transcribe a lot of files. MacWhisper takes mp3, wav, m4a, ogg, opus, mov and mp4 by drag and drop, and it does batch transcription. It also transcribes YouTube videos and podcasts. Gabble accepts a dropped audio or video file and gives you a transcript. That is the whole feature.

You need meetings transcribed. MacWhisper lists automatic meeting recording for Zoom, Teams, Webex, Skype, Chime and Discord. Gabble has no meeting recording and no speaker labels. If meetings are the reason you are shopping, stop here and get MacWhisper.

You want many AI and cloud providers. MacWhisper's list includes OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, Google Gemini, Ollama, Deepseek, Azure, LM Studio, OpenRouter, Deepgram, ElevenLabs and Gladia. Gabble supports Ollama, Anthropic and OpenAI-compatible endpoints.

You want a long-running product from a known developer. MacWhisper has been sold for years, through Gumroad and the Mac App Store. Gabble is version 0.1 and only available as a direct download.

You need a wide language list. MacWhisper says it supports 100 languages. Gabble's default Parakeet v3 covers 25 European languages. For more you switch to Whisper Large v3 Turbo, which covers 99.

You prefer to pay once for a supported app. A €64 licence with lifetime updates is a clear deal, and it funds the developer. Gabble is free, and free beta software comes with fewer promises.

Where Gabble is the better choice

You mostly dictate into other apps. Gabble's design is all about that loop. Hold Right Option (or Right Command, Right Control or Fn), talk, release, and the text is pasted. Tap the key for hands-free. Esc cancels. Your clipboard is restored afterwards.

You want the output to change with the app. Per-app rules choose a mode for you: Email in Mail, Message in Slack, Developer in Xcode, VS Code and Terminal. You can write custom modes with your own prompt. We could not confirm from MacWhisper's pages whether it has per-app modes, so check its docs if you need them.

You want the dictation extras. Gabble has a custom dictionary with "heard as" replacements, voice snippets, spoken commands such as "new line" and "bullet point", and a command mode that rewrites selected text when you say "make this shorter". It also keeps a searchable history and usage stats.

You do not want to pay for better dictation. MacWhisper's free version includes system-wide dictation. Its site lists high quality dictation and automatic grammar improvement under Pro. In Gabble every model and every mode is free.

You want one download with everything in it. MacWhisper's docs note that the App Store build has fewer integrated AI provider options than the direct build, because of App Store restrictions. Gabble has a single build.

How do they compare on privacy?

They are close, and both are good.

MacWhisper uses local models by default and describes that as complete privacy for your files. Cloud providers are optional. If you choose one, your data goes to it.

Gabble transcribes on the Mac and has no cloud transcription option. Dictated audio is held in memory, never written to disk and never uploaded. Optional AI cleanup sends only transcript text to the provider you set up, or nothing at all if that provider is Ollama on the same machine. History is local JSON with a retention setting.

Neither app is open source.

What do they cost?

Gabble is free, with no paid tier.

MacWhisper, as of October 2026, from macwhisper.com:

  • Free: described as free forever, with core transcription and system-wide dictation.
  • Pro: €64 per licence, pay once, includes lifetime updates.

We could not confirm the US dollar price, the App Store price or the number of devices per licence, so check the vendor's site for those.

Verdict

Get MacWhisper if recordings are your main work. It handles batches, YouTube links, podcasts and meetings, and Gabble does not try to compete there.

Get Gabble if your main work is writing by voice in Mail, Slack, your editor and everywhere else, and you want that to be free. Keep in mind the limits: Apple Silicon only, no meeting mode, and text arrives after you stop speaking.

Plenty of people will want both. They do not conflict: use MacWhisper for the two-hour interview and Gabble for the reply you dictate afterwards. Download Gabble, or compare it with Superwhisper, VoiceInk and the rest of the Mac dictation apps.
